Migrating Windows vCenter Server 6.0 to vCenter Server Appliance 6.5

You can migrate a vCenter Server instance with Platform Services Controller (version 6.0) to a vCenter Server Appliance 6.5 instance with an embedded Platform Services Controller appliance. In this case the software migrates the vCenter Server instance and the Platform Services Controller instance at the same time.

vCenter Data Migration and it’s preservation.
Optional you can also migrate Events, Tasks and Performance to the new vCenter Appliance

 

VMWare Migration Assistant, will help you to collect all informations and migrate your vCenter.
You can find it, on the installation CD, „/migration-assistant/VMWare-Migration-Assistant“
We need some informations:
Administrator Password
vCenter Server Service Account and Password

 

Migration Steps

  1. vCenter Server Appliance UI Installer
  2. FQDN for the Source Windows Server
  3. Validate and Accept
  4. Select Deployment size

You can find the „vCenter Server Appliance UI Installer“ on the installation CD, „/vcsa-ui-installer/win32/installer“

VMWare Invalid configuration for device ’12‘

Beim versuchen einen Vorlage/VM zu Migriern „Datastore – Migration“ erscheint folgende Meldung:

(Ungültige Konfiguration für Gerät ’12‘)

Das Problem liegt daran dass die Netzwerkkonfiguration nicht stimmt.
Invalidbacking

Die Netzwerkkonfiguration anpassen und die Vorlage/VM kann wieder verschoben werden.

VMWare „Error in the RPC receive loop: RpcIn: Unable to send“

Im Event Viewer werden folgende „Warning“ Einträge angezeigt.

Das Problem liegt daran dass während einen VMWare Tools Installation/Aktualisierung das “tools.conf” nicht erstellt wurde oder das file hat keinen inhalt.

Problemlösung:

Das “tools.conf” file erstellen oder mit dem inhalt aktualisieren.
Das file befindet sich:

Guest operating system Path to configuration file
Windows XP and Windows Server 2000/2003 C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Tools\tools.conf
Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and

Das Problem kommt vor, wenn man zbsp. einen VM mit eine ESXi version vor 4.1 U1 erstellt hat.

Das kann folgendermassen gelöst werden:

To work around this issue configure disk.EnableUUID to false.
To configure disk.EnableUUID using the vSphere Web Client:
  1. Right-click the virtual machine and click Shut Down Guest OS.
  2. Right-dick the virtual machine and select Edit Settings.
  3. Click VM Options.
  4. Expand the Advanced section and click Edit Configuration.
  5. Locate the disk.EnableUUId parameter and set the value to false.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Right-click the virtual machine and click Power On.

Sobald sich ein Benutzer an einen Virtual Maschine einloggt, wird einen Application Event eintrag geschrieben.
